I would like to share an excerpt from a beautiful poem written in 1911 by Cavafy, which is inspired by Homer’s book, The Odyssey, about Odysseus’s return to his home island of Ithaca. The poem is rich with symbolism about our own life’s journey.
“Keep Ithaka always on your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.”
As the poem suggests, a person’s journey in life is not without obstacles. Riches are gained not from material means but from your inner treasure: the experiences gained which will make your life richer and worthwhile.
As 2021 commences, sail forth with hope and the knowledge that you are here to experience life and everything it has to offer. Challenges are part of our journey: your character is built by the obstacles you decide to face in life.
Wishing you all a wonderful 2021, and may you find a way to be present in the moment, so that you cultivate your inner desires. May you also enjoy living the fullness of life with great wisdom.
With love, kindness and compassion,
