We struggle to meditate because there is no meditation program in our mind, so we don’t know what to expect, what we are supposed to feel. Meditation has no structure: it is a natural flow of energy.

We don’t stop our thoughts when we are working or taking a shower, so how can we expect to stop our thoughts when we meditate? We have millions of thoughts every day. It is the job of your mind to collect information; to think, to see, to feel, to hear, etc. But you cannot let yourself get lost in your thoughts.

If you find you are unable to control your thoughts, there are many ways to incorporate meditation into your daily life. Go for a walk, enjoy the fresh air, nature, the sun. Walking with awareness, in the present moment will allow you to move away from repeating negative thoughts that stop you from meditating. Any type of exercise is a meditation: yoga, pilates, dancing etc. The more you do those things; the easier meditation will become, because you have trained your mind to focus.

Training your mind to focus on breathing will enhance your meditation further. Therefore, the first step in successfully meditating while being still is, to relax as you focus on your breathing. If you are stressed, you are not using the full capacity of your lungs. Specific breathing techniques help to calm the mind and bring your brain wave patterns to alpha level (relaxation level). If you can control your physical, emotional, and mental bodies by being calm, your spiritual body will be calm. Therefore, prepare your body, mind and soul to work together as one unit to ensure you are effective in your meditation. Breathing is the door to your health and to meditation.

When you are calm and happy, you are meditating. When you are in control of your breathing you are meditating.
