Breathe. Just Breathe

In nature animals, plants and trees breathe in oxygen. It is the second most abundant gas in the atmosphere.  Oxygen is also the most abundant element in the human body (by mass) because our bodies are 70% water. Breathing is life: it is a part of our planet, a part of our entire being and essential to life and wellbeing.

The deeper our breath, the greater the benefits, not only to our physical body but also to our mind and emotional body. Shallow breathing is linked to the “flight or fight” (stress) response. Notice how you breathe when you are stressed.

Shallow breathing limits the diaphragm’s movement. You can feel like you are short of breath because the lower part of your lungs do not receive enough air when you breathe in.

Instead, if you take deep breaths pushing air in and out from your stomach, your lungs will receive greater oxygen. Deep breathing has been shown to slow the heartbeat and lower or stabilize blood pressure. Deep breathing together with holding the breath has shown to help respiratory conditions, aid sleep, anxiety  and even asthma induced exercise.

Deep breathing, and holding your breath through breathing exercises is fundamental to meditation.  Meditation offers benefits, however doing a breathing exercise for 10-15 minutes directly before meditation will greatly enhance your meditation and increase the benefits of meditation.
